Phonetically Conditioned Allomorphy of Functional Words in a Dialect of Southern Italy

چکیده
This paper examines a particular kind of phonetic variation observed in the realization of articles and clitics in a dialect of Southern Italy. The examined bound morphs consist of single unstressed vowels, which appear to be phonologically underspecified with regard to height. The spectral characteristics of 157 tokens show that these vocalic segments form a continuum ranging from high to mid low vowels, whereas the normal inventory of unstressed vowels in this dialect only contains /i ́ a u/. In order to determine the factors underlying the apparently random allomorphy, the correlations between vowel quality and a number of variables are tested, among which the quality of the preceding and the following vowel, duration, and intensity. The theoretical status of the observed variation as well as a functional explanation of the lowering of unstressed vowels are discussed Posted at the Zurich Open Repository and Archive, University of Zurich ZORA URL: https://doi.org/10.5167/uzh-91009 Originally published at: Schmid, Stephan; Maturi, Pietro (1999). Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect
In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is a monotonous tree that grows in the tropic areas. The southern regions and some parts of central Iran is its natural habitat. Tropical people use all the components of the tree and its fruits. In standard Persian, the Arabic word “naxl” is used to name it. However, in many Iranian dialects the words moɤ, mog, mok, mox, moč, mo, xormâ dâr and deraxt-e xormâ are...
متن کاملSuppletive (?) tonal alternations in Munken nouns
The most obvious interpretation of Paster’s results is that tonally conditioned PCSA is in fact extremely rare. Before accepting this interpretation, however, it is important to consider the possibility that a significant class of examples was systematically neglected, though not for want of a large and balanced survey. Since Paster’s stated focus was on affixal morphology, it may have been tha...
متن کاملComplexities of Tonal Realisation in a Right-dominant Chinese Wu Dialect – Disyllabic Tone Sandhi in a Speaker from Wencheng
An acoustically-based description is given of the isolation tones and rightdominant tone sandhi in disyllabic words of a male speaker of the Chinese Oūjiāng 甌江 Wú 吳 dialect of Wénchéng 文成 . His seven isolation tones show typical Wu complexity, comprising two mid-level, two rising, two falling-rising and one depressed level pitch shapes. Typical too is his three-way voicing contrast in syllable-...
متن کاملEjective reduction in chaha is conditioned by more than prosodic position
This paper examines a neutralization asymmetry in Chaha ejectives, concluding that reduction is conditioned not by prosodic position alone, but also by place and manner of articulation. An acoustic examination of Chaha, a Gurage dialect of the Ethiopian Semitic language family, shows that its velar ejectives display a much stronger tendency to lose burst cues before another ejective than do alv...
